Fifth National Seminar on Commercial Insurance Development Unites Industry Consensus —
Function as an economic shock absorber and a social stabilizer
As one of the series of events for the Tianjin Wudao Financial Forum in 2026, the 5th National Seminar on Commercial Insurance Development was held yesterday at Nankai University's Jinnan Campus. Organized by the Commercial Insurance Research Branch of the China Social Security Society and hosted by the School of Economics at Nankai University, this seminar focused on the theme "Facing 2035: Reshaping the New Landscape of the Insurance Industry." Approximately 300 representatives from the China Social Security Society, insurance enterprises, leading universities, and top think tanks attended the event.
This symposium conducted in-depth discussions on key topics including risk governance, coordination of livelihood protection, and digital-intelligent transformation. It aimed to build industry consensus, explore new pathways for high-quality development of commercial insurance, and enable the insurance sector to better serve as an economic shock absorber and social stabilizer in support of China's modernization.
On the main forum, Zheng Wei, Vice President of the Commercial Insurance Research Branch of the China Social Security Society and Professor at Peking University, delivered a keynote report focusing on enhancing asset-liability management in insurance. Zhu Minglai, also Vice President of the branch and a professor at Nankai University, presented a report analyzing the socio-economic impact of fully establishing long-term care insurance systems. Experts from multiple institutions also delivered speeches on topics including: "A Complete Transition from 'Health Risk Screening' to 'Health Risk Management': A New Development Pattern for the Health Insurance Industry Serving 2035," "End-to-End Risk Reduction: Reshaping Insurance Value," "Serving the Overall Goal of Building a Financial Powerhouse through High-Quality Development of the Insurance Industry," and "Research on the Positioning and Development Path of Future Insurance Professional Intermediaries."
That afternoon, two parallel forums were held. Forum One focused on "Payment, Services, and Ecosystems: Synergistic Development Paths Between the Insurance and Health & Wellness Industries During the 15th Five-Year Plan Period." Panelists discussed health insurance product innovation, health and wellness service supply, and payment system reforms, exchanging insights on synergistic development paths between the insurance and health & wellness industries during a roundtable discussion. Forum Two centered on "People's Livelihood, Green Development, and Technology: Academic Seminar on New Growth Drivers for the Insurance Industry." Experts and scholars delivered speeches on new growth drivers for the insurance industry and engaged in discussions on how insurance services can support national strategies under the Belt and Road Initiative.
During the meeting, the "Concise Knowledge Series on Commercial Insurance" and the "2026 Small and Medium-Sized Life Insurance Company Development Research Report" were officially released. The series is built on the principles of conciseness, practicality, authority, and readability, providing comprehensive coverage of key commercial insurance concepts. The report focuses on sustainable operations for small and medium-sized life insurers amid low interest rates, intensifying channel competition, and regulatory transitions, offering actionable recommendations.
To advance the vision of "Empowering 2035, Reshaping the Insurance Industry Landscape," Nankai University has jointly established the Pension Finance Innovation Research Center with Shanghai Pudong Development Bank and Shanghai International Trust Co., Ltd. The center conducts forward-looking research on pension management, financing for the elderly care industry, trust services for elderly care, and age-friendly financial services, creating an integrated platform that unites academia, industry, and application.
